Q. What is cosmetology and types of cosmetic treatments?

Several psychological studies say that humans, in general, are attracted to a beautiful face faster than they can analyze the person’s character. True, isn’t it? Most of us would definitely have idolized our favorite movie stars and other celebrities, who are drop-dead gorgeous or extremely charming. But did you know that many of them have modified their natural look to enhance their beauty? This is possible by Cosmetic Surgery. Let’s first see how the procedure began.

History of Cosmetology: Ever since humans were able to see their reflection in water, there have been cosmetologists. In ancient times, the Egyptian women were said to have perfected the art of cosmetology by using ochre and dye on their cheeks and eyes. Even the wig stylists appeared very early in the history of cosmetology. The Roman women were said to prefer having curly hair, which they got perhaps by using a heated curling iron.

Modern-day Cosmetology: The principles and procedures of cosmetic surgery are focused on enhancing the person’s physical appearances like improving the aesthetic appeal, proportion and symmetry. It can be performed on all areas in the human body. Many people think that cosmetic surgery is same as plastic surgery. But no, they are not. While cosmetic surgery is an optional procedure for improving the appearance, plastic surgery is done to correct the facial and body defects due to birth disorders, burns or diseases.

Types of procedures: Surgical type The traditional open surgery is replaced by Minimal Invasive Surgery, which enables the surgeon to perform even a major surgery through several tiny openings instead of large cut. This type of surgery is done using a viewing scope and specially designed surgical instruments. The laser procedure used in cosmetic surgeries helps the patient to recover faster. Some examples of surgical procedures are liposuction, breast implants and facelifts.Non-surgical type Not all beauty enhancements needs a surgery. Skin refreshment, reducing wrinkles, removing unwanted facial and body hair can be done by non-surgical methods at our leisure. A variety of skin care products are available for correcting aging skin, uneven pigmentation and sunburns. Chemical peels can be used for rejuvenating the skin. Waxing can be done for hair removal.

There are even injectables to help get the beauty you need. Botulinum toxin (BOTOX) injection is used to relax wrinkles. Dermal filler is injected to plump thin lips and to reshape the nose (rhinoplasty).
